Amorim hails Man Utd control after 'fully deserved win'

Manchester United had to work hard for their 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town, coming from behind before having to defend a lead with 10 men.

Ruben Amorim says Manchester United "fully deserved" their 3-2 win over Ipswich Town, having played the second half with 10 men.

Jaden Philogene had given Ipswich the lead after a defensive mix-up early on, but Sam Morsy's own goal and Matthijs de Ligt's close-range finish turned things around.

Patrick Dorgu was then sent off in the 43rd minute for a late tackle on Omari Hutchinson, with Philogene's cross sneaking in to restore parity on the stroke of half-time.

However, Harry Maguire scored just two minutes after the break to restore United's lead, with the hosts defending it staunchly to get a much-needed three points.

United have now won 110 Premier League matches after conceding the first goal, the most of any side in Premier League history.

It was a familiar situation for Amorim's men though, as this was the 12th time they had conceded the first goal in the competition since his first game in charge on November 24, the most of any side.

Amorim was delighted with the response they showed to the early setback, as well as the resoluteness of their defence in the second half.

"I'm not frustrated," Amorim told TNT Sports. "We controlled the game and since the first minute, I felt the players were trying to play, and we managed to score two goals.

"The sending-off changed the game a bit but the fight the fans showed, and the fans helped a lot, and we fully deserved the three points.

"There are some moments that are really hard, but that's natural in every profession, you need to suffer."

Dorgu was also at fault for Ipswich's opener, not looking up before passing the ball back to Andre Onana, who had rushed off his line, which left Philogene with an empty net to aim for.

The left-back was Amorim's only signing in the January transfer window, but he is confident that he is suited for the league.

"Players can have a mistake like Patrick today. The sending-off, he wants to play the ball," Amorim added.

"He is ready for the Premier League. Last week he had a good performance against Everton.

[On Wednesday], they [the critics] will say he is not experienced enough for the Premier League, but I don't feel that way."

Meanwhile, Ipswich's wait for a win in 2025 continued as they fell to a second consecutive defeat.

The Tractor Boys have picked up fewer points than any other Premier League side this calendar year (two), while they have dropped the most points from winning positions in the competition (22).

They remain five points behind 17th-place Wolves and only avoid relegation in 2.8% of the Opta supercomputer simulations.

Kieran McKenna was disappointed that Ipswich could not take their chance, especially after playing with a numerical advantage for over half the game.

"We're really annoyed with how it ended up," McKenna told TNT Sports.

"We didn't defend the set plays well enough in the first half and then the one at the start of the second half is really poor. We knew the threat was on set-pieces and the third goal is unacceptable from our point of view and from then on, we were chasing.

"We need to stand up and be counted better. We have defended set-pieces well all season, but we were unable to deal with them tonight. We were not strong enough from a maturity point of view, and they handled it better than us when they were down to 10 men.

"We had some good spells in the first half. We started the game really well, and we can have a high level. We've had spells like that in nearly all the games.

"It is on us; we have to own it. It's not a night where we're feeling many positives, we let one get away from us. We need to learn from this. We played against a group of players that showed their maturity and quality."
